Lorelai Gilmore’s addiction to coffee was established in the very first scene of the show. In the pilot, Lorelai goes to Luke’s diner and begs Luke Danes for a cup of coffee. The sly diners questioned how many cups of coffee Lorelai drank before entering the establishment. While she admits she already has five cups, she still wants more.
Showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino established Rory’s penchant for caffeine during the same scene. Rory meets Lorelai at dinner for breakfast and insists she’s crabby because she “needs the caffeine.” Rory was 15 when the series started in 2000. Over time, his addiction to coffee grew.

It seemed that Lorelai and Rory would almost single-handedly keep Luke’s diner in business. He dined at the Stars Hollow establishment for several days, and even stopped to get coffee regularly. Lorelai and Rory were not only enjoying coffee at Luke, though. Rory regularly visited the coffee carts at Yale, and Lorelai drank plenty of java at the Dragonfly Inn and at home. Surely they must be celebrating National Coffee Day right now, along with everyone else.
So, how many cups did he actually drink? According to Refinery 29The Gilmore girls drank an astonishing 503 cups of coffee during the show’s seven seasons. The women drank the most coffee during the first season of the show and then leveled off a bit.
