When he proposed to childhood sweetheart Cherry Seaborn in late 2017, Ed Sheeran wanted the moment to be perfect.
But the singer has now revealed that it was anything but Cheri so shocked she asked if he was joking.
Ed, who soon married Cheri in early 2018, said: “I was on one knee and I said, ‘Will you marry me?
“And she was like, ‘Are you kidding?’ There was such a long silence and I just went, ‘Please?’
“It’s the most human I’ve ever felt because in my career. Sometimes you find it’s like, ‘Can I do this?’ And people are like ‘yes’.
“You get to a point where it becomes normal and then you’re in a situation where you’re literally on your knees, ‘Will you marry me?’
“It’s such a big life decision that one has to make a decision in the blink of an eye. Thankfully she said yes.”
Speaking on Swedish talk show Skavlan in an episode that aired tonight, Ed said that Cheri’s reaction to his proposal wasn’t the only thing that was less than ideal. The winter season further accelerated the work.
‘I kept saying we should go for a walk’
Ed added the proposal in Suffolk: “The day it was raining and I made a af***ing pergola at the end of the garden to do it. Sunset, pergola, some wine . . . and with it rained was falling down.
“I kept saying we should go for a walk and she was like, ‘No!’ I was like, ‘Are you sure you don’t want to go for a walk?’
“Time was ticking. There was a date engraved on the ring and I was like, ‘I have to do it today!’ “It gets to 9 o’clock and I was like, ‘For the f***’ sake!”
They say that the path of true love never runs smoothly. At least you got there in the end, Ed.

The excitement for Adele’s big comeback is on the pitch.
But one guy isn’t counting the days until his new album is by his best friend Alan Carr, because he’s already heard it.

I have to be careful, but it’s wonderful to have him back. Because even after listening to that small thing, it was as if I had seen an old friend.
After countless celebrities complained about being trolled out there, Allen also urged her fellow stars to take off Twitter, which she hasn’t posted for nearly four years.
He added: “I’m on Twitter too much. Just take it off. It’s dying a death. If you’re at that then you’re a dinosaur.
“Come on shallow Instagram. I hate Twitter, but I love Instagram. It is so shallow that it fits me perfectly. And when I’m in Speedos I get a lot of likes – it was a joke.”
Thanks for clarifying, Alan.
