Trump’s lawsuit — which is seeking “damages in the amount to be determined at trial, but believed to be not less than one hundred million dollars” — alleges that Mary Trump disclosed tax information to the Times. The amount amounted to an illegal breach of contract, among other claims, because the disclosure allegedly violated a 2001 agreement between the Trump family.
The former president’s lawsuit also accused Times reporters of “atrocious interference” with the settlement agreement, among other claims, in which he “relentlessly seeks out Mary Trump and knowingly violated the settlement agreement.” Susan Craig, David Barstow and Russ Buettner of The Times have been named as defendants.
The lawsuit alleges, “The actions of Mary Trump and The Times defendants were, at least in part, motivated by their genuine malice toward the plaintiffs.” It claims that Times journalists “illegally deducted significant personal, professional and/or business-related gain(s), including monetary gain, fame, acclaim, notoriety, increased market valuation, increased revenue, and/ Includes, but is not limited to, career advancement.”
In a statement, Mary Trump said: “I think he’s a loser, and he’s going to throw anything he can against the wall. It’s desperation. The walls are closing in and he’s against the wall.” throwing anything against him that he thinks will stick. As is always the case with Donald, he will try to change the subject.”
A Times spokesperson said in a statement that the newspaper’s “coverage of Donald Trump’s taxes helped inform citizens through careful reporting on a topic of public interest. The lawsuit was an attempt to silence independent news organizations.” and we plan to vigorously defend against it.”
According to the Journalism Awards website, three journalists won the Pulitzer Prize for their 18-month investigation of Trump’s finances, which “rebutted his claims of self-created wealth and uncovered a tax-evading business empire.”
Mary Trump – the daughter of the former president’s late older brother, Fred Trump Jr. – has been outspoken against her uncle, including in a book called “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man.” In 2020 that painted an unflattering portrait of the Trump family and their financial dealings.
Mary Trump also revealed in her tell-all book that she was a source for the Times story about Donald Trump’s tax returns.
