More than 605,000 people have died from Covid-19 in Brazil – the second highest number of deaths in the world after the United States.
The report alleges that Bolsonaro’s government allowed the deadly coronavirus to spread across the country in a failed attempt to achieve herd immunity. It recommends the president be personally convicted of nine offences, including abetment to crime, slyness and crimes against humanity.
Bolsonaro has repeatedly dismissed the commission’s investigation and the resulting report as politically motivated.
The final document – the result of a six-month investigation – will now be sent to Brazil’s attorney general’s office. However, Attorney General Augusto Arras is considered an aide to the president and is not expected to pursue charges.
The commission is also expected to send a copy of the report to the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
‘What these people have done is absurd’
The commission’s representative, Senator Rennan Calheiros, presented the report publicly for the first time last week.
He said on Tuesday that the document assigns responsibility for the uncontrolled epidemic to many in Brazil, but Bolsonaro bears the main responsibility.
“It (the responsibility) rests primarily on this president, this serial killer, who is compelled to die and keeps repeating everything he’s done before,” Calheiros told a news conference Tuesday morning.
Bolsonaro has already dismissed the commission’s findings as biased, and complained about the report during an interview with a local radio broadcaster in Mato Grosso do Sul on Monday.
“They label me as a genocide, a charlatan, a document fraudster and a destroyer. What these people have done is absurd,” the president said, referring to the lawmakers on the commission.
Bolsonaro has long underestimated the seriousness of the coronavirus, and has argued for the need to prioritize Brazil’s economic health. He tested positive for Covid-19 in 2020.
This is a developing story.
