This is the horrific moment when a man is dragged to death by a tiger after climbing into the zoo enclosure.
The shocking footage showed the tiger surrounded the man, while panicked spectators pelted stones at the hungry animal to distract him.
According to Delhi Zoo staff, the man, identified as 20-year-old Maqsood, had climbed into the enclosure.
However, eyewitnesses claimed that he had slipped.
Witnesses said the animal appeared to have been playing with its prey for some time.
When the police reached the spot, a tiger named Vijay can be seen dragging the victim with its jaw closed around its neck.
Viewers criticized the zoo’s handling of the incident, claiming that the staff failed to rush the man to the aid and did not put the big cat down from the tranquilizer gun.
Eyewitness Prakash Kumar said: “There was no guard near the enclosure at that time. It looked like the man had jumped into the fence. I don’t know what he was trying to do.
“Everyone started shouting for help. But only one guard of the zoo came. We started throwing stones and whatever we got at the tiger. But in no time he had dragged the man to the corner of the enclosure.”
The body of the victim was retrieved about two hours later when the staff were able to drive the animal away.
Zoo officials insisted they did their best to save the man and denied allegations of dereliction of duty by the guards.
Spokesman Riyaz Ahmed Khan said Maqsood was warned not to go too close to the fence.
He added: “Despite repeated warnings that they should not get too close to the outer enclosure, the young man eventually climbed a knee-high fence through some small hedges, then jumped 18 feet down into a protective ditch.”
Delhi Zoo director Amitabh Agnihotri said the staff tried unsuccessfully to divert the tiger’s attention as it attacked the man.
