Maher closed the show’s panel discussion by tackling an in-party battle between Democrat lawmakers over a $1.5 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill and a $3.5 trillion spending bill being championed by the progressive wing, noting that The farthest members of the party were “very mad”. Maher said, “They are mad at them because they are not progressive enough – forgetting that they were elected only because they are not progressive! They are liberals.”
“They were elected only because they are not progressives! They are liberals!”
“Here’s my question: does spending more money make you a better person? Or a bigger liberal?” Maher asked. “And maybe both of these, the cinema and the munchkin … can keep their thumb more on the pulse on the average Democrat in the country.”
During his opening monologue, Maher said that Congress deferred a government shutdown by passing a sustained resolution, raising audience enthusiasm.
“You’re cheering? Because we made it to December 3. That’s what they did!” Maher reacted. “It’s the equivalent of putting duct tape on your shower nozzle unless you actually called the plumber.”
The HBO star criticized the “stupid, stupid game of chicken” between Democrats and Republicans, saying “Democrats had to back down at the last minute.”
“Nancy Pelosi blinks, which in itself is new,” Maher quipped.
