Apple AirPods are reportedly working on something that will be able to read your body temperature, improve your hearing and monitor your posture.
Apple Watch is already capable of monitoring aspects of your health, and wall street journal Now reports that documents and sources have indicated that the company is exploring ways to make its Signature EarPods a health gadget.
but Journal writes that it is unclear whether Apple is “trying to develop new hearing-aid features specific to the AirPods or to market the earbuds’ existing hearing-improvement features as hearing aids”. The report suggests that the company is looking forward to adding health features to other products beyond the Apple Watch.
The tech giant is reportedly working on a version of its earphones that will be able to determine the wearer’s body temperature from inside the ear, according to documents show Journal.
In terms of monitoring the wearer’s posture, the earphones will “lean on the motion sensor in the earbuds” then send an alert to inform the wearer that they are leaning.
Journal Note that being able to use AirPods to improve your hearing will “significantly expand” the product’s reach and help users who have less acute hearing issues that cannot be treated.
Apple’s AirPods Pro already have the feature to improve the hearing ability of the wearer.
But so far nothing can be said about when such an item might hit the shelves, sources said. Journal These types of earphones may never enter the market.
The Hearing Improvement feature will likely be an extension of already existing features known as Conversation Boost and Live Listen. Earlier this month, Apple released a feature that amplifies the sound of the person speaking in front of the user they are conversing with.
New FDA rules “allow the sale of a new class of inexpensive hearing aids directly to consumers for the treatment of mild to moderate hearing loss”, Journal report, implying that AirPods may be marketed as hearing aids.
To take the temperature inside the ear, Apple is reportedly trying to add a thermometer to the earphones, which is similar to the skin-temperature gauge that’s been rumored for the Apple Watch.
Journal writes that such features are not expected to become available until next year.
The stemless AirPods Pro are set to be available next year.
