Apple has released its latest product: a new cleaning cloth for its performance.

At $19 or the same pound, it’s a lot more expensive than many competitors. For example, on Amazon, one seller is offering 20 microfiber cleaning cloths for just £6.69.

But it claims to offer special features above and beyond any normal cleaning cloth – and Apple warns that using any other type of cloth on its £5,499 display could damage them.

Like any other Apple product, it can be purchased directly from the Apple Store, where it has its own listing. Like other Apple products, it includes its own special features, as well as a “What’s in the Box” section, which states that none of the accessories come with a polishing cloth.

“Made with soft, non-abrasive materials, the polishing cloth safely and effectively cleans any Apple display, including nano-textured glass,” reads the description.

“Nano-textured glass” is a screen design included on Apple’s more premium computer screens, such as the Pro Display XDR, where it costs around £1,000 to add. There are small carvings right across the screen, which means it has a matte appearance without the sheer contrast that often comes with such displays.

In Apple’s support articles on the Pro Display XDR, it warns that cleaning the screen with a non-Apple cloth may damage the screen. The Pro Display XDR, which costs £4,599, comes with its own official Apple cleaning cloth.

But the cloth can also be used on any other type of Apple Display.

Apple launched the fabric straight after an event that introduced two versions of the AirPods 3 and MacBook Pro, which include newer and much faster versions of their own chips. The clothes were not mentioned during the actual live stream.

According to its “compatibility” list, it’s not actually compatible with any of those new devices, but that’s likely because they haven’t been released yet. Otherwise, the list includes almost every recent Apple product with a display, with no indication that there is a product with which it is not compatible.
