- The stopgap spending bill was to keep the government funded and run with a provision to suspend the debt limit until 2022
- Progressive lawmakers take issue with funding to defend Israel
- Republican lawmakers are already lashing out at Democrats for abruptly calling
- House Democrats still aiming to bring the bill in later today
House Democrats removed a $1 billion provision toward their Iron Dome defense system from an ongoing proposal to keep the government open and funded before Sept. 30 after squid protests.
According to Politico reporter Andrew Desiderio, Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan are leading the blockade.
Funding for the Iron Dome will be included in Congress’s bipartisan Fiscal Year 2022 Defense Bill, House Appropriations Chair Rep. Rosa DeLauro said on Tuesday.
DailyMail.com has reached out to the offices of the three progressives, but is yet to get revert.
Top Republican lawmakers have already banned Democrats from surrendering to the progressive wing.
Reps. Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez were among progressive lawmakers pushing for funding from a funding bill for Israel.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy wrote on Twitter: “Democrats have just pulled funding from the Iron Dome—the missile defense system that saved countless lives in Israel from Hamas rocket attacks.”
‘While Dems succumb to the anti-Semitic influence of their radical members, Republicans will always stand by Israel.’
Representative Alice Staffanic, who heads the House Republican Conference, labeled the Democrats “the party invading Israel and their inherent right to self-defense.”
‘Republicans stand firmly with and support Israel’ [the Iron Dome],’ the New York lawmaker wrote on Twitter.
Texas Representative August Pfluger said, ‘Democrats no longer support Iron Dome. Does this mean they want rockets to kill civilians? This party is getting more and more fierce day by day.
Republican leaders in the House immediately expressed outrage after Democrats withdrew the provision
Senator Ted Cruz, who vowed to thwart Democrats’ attempt to act on the debt limit, also lambasted his decision to pull funding.
Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who vowed to ease the measure when he reached the Senate, accused Democratic leaders of surrendering to progressives.
‘Sad. The Dem leadership surrendered to the anti-Semitic Left. They hate Israel so much that the Dems are snatching $1 billion in funding for the Iron Dome – a purely defensive system that protects countless innocent civilians from Hamas rockets,’ he wrote on Twitter.
Cruz said, ‘Would any damess have the courage to condemn?’
The House is still aiming to pass a stopgap funding bill to keep the government running until December 3.
But during Tuesday morning’s session of the House Rules Committee, Massachusetts Speaker Jim McGovern unexpectedly called a recess before receiving legislation.
‘We only have one’ [thing] To solve, I hope it won’t take too long,’ McGovern said.
‘I thought we were all set, but we have a small glitch that we have to figure out.’
The session resumed after a delay of a few hours on Tuesday afternoon.
The push to remove funding for the Israeli defense from the stopgap spending bill reportedly comes from squad members Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Along with money to keep federal agencies running and pay their employees, the 93-page spending bill also includes $28.6 billion in disaster aid and $6.3 billion to help resettle Afghan refugees.
The measure will also suspend the loan limit till the mid-term elections, December 2022.
Lawmakers also included a provision to keep Republicans in the House happy, ordering the Pentagon to prepare a report on military equipment left in Afghanistan.
But progressives took issue with funds intended to boost Israel’s military defense.
That group reportedly includes progressive Democrats who in May signed a resolution aimed at halting $735 arms sales to Israel during the deadly violence between Israel and Hamas.
Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib and Rep. Mark Pocan was the principal sponsor of the resolution.
Pocan’s office has told DailyMail.com that it is not part of an ongoing effort to block continued resolution.
Representative Jim McGovern, the Speaker of House Rules, disrupts lawmakers’ session over a ‘small glitch’ – reportedly it was a threat by Democrats to tank the spending bill
Squad fellow Democrats are already pushing for their party’s sudden reversal
Lawmakers missed a July deadline to raise or suspend the debt limit, forcing the US Treasury to take extraordinary measures to keep the dollar flowing through the government.
But that money is weeks away, according to estimates by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.
The measure was expected to be passed by the Democrat-controlled House today.
With only a narrow majority, they may still only lose three votes to achieve it.
But moderate Democrats are already pushing for a sudden change of direction.
‘The Iron Dome is a defensive system used by one of our closest allies to save civilian lives. It needs to be replenished as thousands of rockets were fired by Hamas terrorists controlling Gaza,’ Florida representative Ted Dutch wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.
‘Consider pushing it behind me against this decision.’
Washington’s Progressive Caucus Chair Rep. Pramila Jayapal is scheduled to speak with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi today, CNN’s Ryan Nobles said after the discussion stopped.
Even if the law passes the House today, it faces an uphill battle in the Senate where Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has vowed Republicans will oppose it.
