After a hot streak of singles and an EP, Lil Nas X has finally released a full-length album. The “Industry Baby” singer has enjoyed much industry success to date, with seven singles appearing on the Billboard Hot 100, one of the longest-running number 1 streaks in history. Half of his songs have been collaborations with other artists, so who will join him on the album?
make a deal with the devil
The album’s first single, “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”, led to some interesting sources of publicity. The video shows Lil Nas X dancing to the devil on his lap. This, unsurprisingly, sparked some backlash from religious groups and parents of young children, who had become accustomed to the more family-friendly material on the rapper’s EP, but sparked some views at MSCHF.
In keeping with the video’s theme, the company worked with Lil Nas X to create “Devil’s Boots”, a customized Nike Air Max 97 with a drop of human blood in each pair. An estimated only 666 pairs of shoes were made and they all sold out within a minute. BBC News Nike sued MSCHF for copyright infringement. The Nike logo is visible on the finished product and the shoe juggler wanted to avoid “a false connection between MSCHF’s products and Nike”.
Jailbreak with Jack Harlow
Lil Nas X decided to shed light on the situation in his next music video. “Industry Baby” begins with Lil Nas X in a fictional trial for devil’s shoes, where he is sentenced to five years in the appropriately named Montero State Prison. In what can be seen as a dig at critics of his more mature material, the video features a censored nude dance scene in prison showers. The rapper apparently has no intention of quietly serving his sentence, as the video ends with his accomplice Jack Harlow on the run.
