“Alex was my dear husband and my best friend. Like most long-term relationships, we had our ups and downs, but the truth of it was that we were very close and experienced a lot of life together,” she recently said. explained in eden magazine. “It was important for Alex to keep his personal life separate from his professional life, unless it ‘needed’ to… ie, attend an award show or something like that. For the most part, Alex and I enjoyed being at home. When we did go out, it was probably just for a quick dinner or a movie from time to time, so it wasn’t like we were always out in public to really notice his popularity “

However, she says that as soon as she made her cancer diagnosis public, her perception of her husband and his impact on the rest of the world changed.

“We used to get cartons of mail full of get-well cards etc. delivered to my home address every day, and I knew the studio was getting more. It was amazing,” she said.

While she was thrilled to see how many people love her husband, she said she feels unaware that most of their marriage was a “gift.”

“Looking back, the fact that I didn’t recognize Alex as an ‘icon’ was a gift. We were equal partners in a marriage, and dealt with just like any normal couple for our own personal development. There were issues,” she explained. “If I thought of him as some celebrity it would have been really weird for Alex and me. He could just be himself at home, and that was it.”

Now, less than a year after her late husband’s death, she notes that she is still grieving the loss.

“I remember what Queen Elizabeth said when Prince Philip recently passed away. She said, ‘Grief is the price you pay for being loved.’ It’s true,” she concluded. “There are moments in my day when I miss Alex so much, and I just have to allow myself that time. Sometimes I feel like he’s on a long vacation, and then sometimes his Absence is a reality. Presence is really enjoyable. I find being with my family and friends or doing something creative and new is really helpful.”
